ATLANTA — A Gwinnett County police officer was killed and another remains in critical condition after both were shot while responding to a fraud call Sunday morning near a hotel in Stone Mountain, authorities said.
Police were dispatched around 7:30 a.m. to the Holiday Inn Express located at 1790 E. Park Place Blvd. Upon arrival, officials said a suspect opened fire, striking both officers.
According to Gwinnett County police, the officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. All three individuals were transported to a nearby hospital. One officer later died from their injuries, while the second officer remains hospitalized in critical condition. The condition of the suspect has not been released.
Details surrounding the incident remain limited. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called in to assist with the investigation, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp addressed the shooting in a social media post Sunday afternoon, offering condolences and support.
“Today, we join the Gwinnett County Police Department in mourning the loss of a brave officer and are praying for the swift recovery of another,” Kemp wrote. “This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis, and we are grateful for every one that puts themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians.”
Gwinnett County police said an official donation link has been established for those wishing to support the families of the affected officers.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated additional information will be released as it becomes available.
